Design Series - The Duck House

Sometimes, the best additions to a home are the ones you never saw coming. One afternoon, we received an unexpected call from our neighbour asking if we could re-home four lovely ducks. Their rescue story is one for another day (and another video!), but of course, we said yes.

At first, we housed them in our old chicken coop, but it quickly became clear it wasn’t ideal. The ducks struggled with the height and coaxing them in at night turned into a bit of a comedy routine. But it didn’t take long for us to completely fall in love with their inquisitive, gentle personalities. They deserved a home filled with all the Agatha magic we could muster.

From the very beginning, we knew the duck house had to be beautiful as well as functional, it’s visible from the drive after all. We wanted something charming and characterful, the sort of place Beatrix Potter would approve of. We created an extensive Pinterest board to gather inspiration and slowly began piecing together our dream design.

We wanted the space to be open, so their waste could naturally decay into the earth, while still being entirely secure. The entire structure is enclosed in metal wiring that curves under the ground to prevent any crafty foxes from digging in. It’s safe, airy, and just wild enough to feel like home.

We painted it all white, adding black detailing on the hinges and bolts. Old carved spindles and wooden trims were added for that extra charm. In true Agatha fashion, we didn’t stop at practicalities... We styled it! Inside, you’ll find shelves lined with bits and bobs: potted plants, artwork and even ornaments. Yes, we know… a duck house with decorated shelves might sound a little extravagant, but why not? They deserve it!

We used two old glass windows we’d found on the property, installing them so they look out into the surrounding area. There are ramps for easy access to their cosy sleeping quarters and a large storage area for food supplies. We made sure to add a hatch at the back for easy cleaning, because, well, they're ducks!

The whole project became a labour of love and it feels so special to have created something both practical and magical. And best of all? The ducks absolutely love it. They roam freely during the day, exploring the garden (and occasionally the house) and return happily to their home at night.
