5 Ways to Create a House Full of Magic

There’s something truly special about walking into a home that feels full of wonder, layered, personal, and alive. Our series 'A House Full of Magic' has resonated with so many of you and may be how you found us and this blog! We believe in creating spaces that feel magical in the everyday, where every item has a story to tell. Here are five ways we style our home to feel just that bit more magical, and how you can do the same. We saved the best till last!

1. Layer Your Lighting

Lighting has the power to completely shift the feeling of a space. We steer away from stark spotlights whenever we can, favouring soft, warm light that creates atmosphere. In nearly every room, we’ve layered lamps, wall lights, and picture lights. We adore picture lights for highlighting our art. They not only draw attention to the pieces we love, but they emit a beautiful amber glow in the evenings. Table lamps create the perfect evening atmosphere. We have a small table lamp into the bar area, set atop a circular table with surrounding benches. The result? A perfectly intimate and cozy spot. One of our favourites is a kitchen table lamp with a pink shade, the hue it casts at dusk is nothing short of magical. And then there are our chandeliers… we’ve collected several, but the one in the kitchen, paired with matching wall lights, might be our favourite of all (you can see it featured below).

2. Style with Plants

Plants breathe life, quite literally, into any space. We fill our home with green, trailing vines, wildflowers and hanging plants. It’s a beautiful way to bring the outdoors in and give your home a sense of with the seasons. We house our plants in biscuit barrels, brass urns, hanging baskets and Victorian planters (we’ve only ever seen one like ours!), nothing is off-limits. Finding the right vessel for each plant becomes part of the joy.

We currently have a delicate vintage vase for sale that’s just perfect for flowers, check out our shop!

3. Be Brave with Wallpaper

We never shy away from wallpaper. Texture and pattern are what give a space its unique personality, and wallpaper is one of the easiest ways to transform a room. That said, it’s a big decision, especially if you're not in the middle of a full renovation. But for those who are, don’t be afraid to go bold. We lean into timeless prints like the House of Hackney design we chose for one of our favourite rooms (pictured below). It grounds the space, and no matter how styles shift, it still feels classic.

4. Add Character Through Detail

Our home is full of original character, old beams, low ceilings, and centuries of history, but that hasn't stopped us from adding more. From wood panelling and stained glass to renovated walkways, we’ve leaned into both preservation and thoughtful additions. Our glass walkway connecting the old and new parts of the house is a perfect example of this.

Even if your home doesn’t start with these details, you can always introduce them. Architectural salvage, antique markets, and thoughtful styling go a long way.

5. Fill Your House with Storytelling Objects

Ornaments, trays and shelves, this is where a house really becomes a House Full of Magic. We’ve collected things slowly, over years, and every corner tells a story. You’ll find trays stacked on tables, pink ceramics and Staffordshire Dogs and old portraits of forgotten gentlemen in the bar. It’s eclectic and layered and wonderfully alive. We’ve curated a collection of treasures, some of which have been living here, so you can bring a little of Agatha’s magic into your own home. Our shop is filled with pieces that help tell your story.
