Grandeur Revived: The 9ft English Regency Mirror from the Rutland Arms Collection

Behold the majesty of history reborn in the form of a 9ft English Regency mirror, once part of the Rutland Arms in Bakewell, dating back to circa 1795. This exceptional piece, restored by the talented Ruth Tappin, renowned for her expertise on 'Salvage Hunters: The Restorers,' showcases the epitome of English regency elegance. The incredible mirror also made an appearance on the show!

    The Rutland Arms Legacy:

Originally built in 1804 as 'Derbyshire's most famous inn,' the Rutland Arms catered to aristocrats, gentry, and esteemed guests exploring the High Peak District. The mirror, a witness to centuries past, adds a touch of aristocratic charm. A frequent guest of Rutland Arms was White Watson. He was a grandson of the sculptor Samuel Watson, whose much admired stone carvings adorn Chatsworth House, the palatial home of the Dukes of Devonshire, just three miles to the north-east of Bakewell.

    Noteworthy Guests:

Having hosted historical luminaries such as the King of Saxony, Charles Dickens, Billy Greaves, Joseph Paxton, and Jane Austen, the Rutland Arms carries a rich legacy that resonates through the ages.

Mirror in the Manner of Grinling Gibbons:

The mirror's design, we believe was influenced by the famed Grinling Gibbons, features twin cherub heads with wings reminiscent of Gibbons' Limewood carving at Trinity College Library in 1694. The violin and scrollwork further accentuate the mirror's unique style.

    Dimensions:

    • Height: 255cm
    • Width: 177cm

    A Glimpse Behind the Veil:

The mirror's current state reveals a temporary framework, allowing it to be lifted off the ground for display and easy transport. Behind this curtain, intricate Roman numerals on the back of each carved section chronicle the history of the limewood carvings, a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of its time.
